It may not have the glitz and glamour of Rio nor the magic or mystery of Xinxo and Verrin but the carnival in Allariz is still a festive affair. Cold temperatures and the odd glimpse of rain did nothing to hamper the fun though the official parade through the streets on Sunday left a few bedraggled children in soggy outfits. Saturday night the adults came out to play in full fancy dress and there were the usual suspects. Quite why bearded overweight  men seem to always dress up as hookers is probably left to a Dear Abbey column but there were enough to fill a chilling bordello. The culture of West End musicals were represented by a couple of Les Mis cast offs complete with rat in a cage – though Xavier would be the first to admit no one was going to mistake him for Hugh Jackman. Begonia added a topical economic crisis touch as the gold buying entrepreneur and was quietly making a fortune. Exotic colour was provided by the mixed up (and by the end of the night messed up) Lemon Grass Girls who would seem to be from somewhere north of Chiang Mai. Even the visiting tourists made the effort and though it was not always easy to guess what they were supposed to be, in the spirt of the carnival all were made welcome as the food and wine flowed freely.
